Boing Boing Animals is a free-to-download virtual pet simulation game developed by 5kraD using GameMaker. It was released on the App Store on September 8, 2024 and on the Google Play Store on September 12, 2024. The player acts as the caregiver to slimes that can grow into various creatures resembling animals on Earth.

Gameplay

The player adopts eggs that hatch into Baby Slimes and cares for them by maintaining their fullness and hygiene stats. As slimes are cared for, they will gain growth EXP and eventually advance to the Kiddo stage of growth. Kiddos will grow into Teens and Teens will grow into Adults.

Different slimes will appear based on the previous slime and food eaten, along with the weather and time in the home. Some slimes also have specific gender requirements.

A cared-for slime will produce turds over time, providing the player with coins and jewels. These can be used to purchase items in the store as well as upgrades in the home, mansions and boxes. The player can engage in activities with their slimes by interacting with speech bubbles and play Mini Games. Both the slime window and external player UI are customizable.

While there are no specific end-game goals, the player is presented with a codex that they can try and fill out. There are also missions that can be completed and achievements for each individual slime.

Tutorial

Upon starting the game for the first time, Granny Slime will greet the player and outlines the gameplay mechanics and lore. This information includes how eggs from planet B01-NG have fallen to Earth from a wormhole that opened the day before the game takes place. Only adult slimes can safely travel back to planet B01-NG, and that the player must survey their upbringing until the slimes are old enough to return. She guides the player through tutorials on how to hatch the eggs and raise slimes.

Development

At the beginning of 2023, the company 5kraD was working at went bankrupt. While taking a break, she began drawing pixel art gifs and posting them on the Divoom community app, which gave her the idea for a Tamagotchi-inspired game featuring the slime animals she had drawn. She had wanted to create a game full of animals for a long time and began developing Boing Boing Animals on April 1st, 2023. The first slime she designed was the Teen Dinosaur, and as a tribute, it became the only one to have blush marks on its cheeks, which all slimes originally had during development.

The concept of animals growing from slimes was inspired by her real-life pets, a rabbit and a cat, which often look like slimes to her. The slimes pooping often was also inspired by her pet rabbit.

Slimes cannot die in the game because when 5kraD was seven years old, she took her Digimon Tamagotchi to school and battled with her friends. Her Agumon ended up dying, and she recalls crying all the way home. This lingering memory caused her to avoid incorporating death into Boing Boing Animals.

App icon

The app icon of Boing Boing Animals was a normal slime egg against a light blue background. In version 1.3.1, the icon was changed to a sheep with a rainbow in the background.
